A breath-taking snowshoe hike with ascent through a fragrant forest to a panoramic restaurant followed by a descent into a fantastic landscape.

This sunny panoramic snowshoe hike offers a dreamlike setting for athletic activities. It features a steady ascent of more than 400 m in altitude followed by a somewhat steeper descent. The reward for your efforts is sublime views of two valleys and the chance to experience untouched nature with secluded forests and dazzling snowfields.

The hike begins with a gentle ascent between chalets and then through woods. Once you pass the tree line, there is a wonderful view over the Rhone valley and the snow-covered summits of the Binn valley. We continue over open terrain to the Fleschen mountain restaurant with its sun terrace.

The second half of the hike leads downhill over south-west-facing slopes with a view of Fieschertal. This section of the trail offers a magnificent view over the valley and the glittering peaks of the “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch” UNESCO World Heritage Site, which protects the most glaciated region in the Alps.

Directions & Parking facilities

Motorway A9 and main road through the Rhone valley to Fürgangen. At the roundabout, turn left towards Bellwald.

Large parking spaces near the Richenen chairlift valley station.

Take the train to Fürgangen (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn) and then the cable car to Bellwald. Walk up through the village for ten minutes until you reach the starting point of the hike at the car park of the Richenen chairlift station. You can also take the regular ski bus. You can find the complete timetable at www.sbb.ch.

Additional information

The hike begins and ends at the large car parks at the Richenen chairlift valley station. The first part of the trail leads steadily north-east – first between chalets and then through the forest – before zigzagging over open terrain to the Fleschen mountain restaurant.

We continue west past the chairlift before finally descending the slopes with a view of the Fieschertal.

Instead of the entire hike, you can also take on only the ascent or the descent and cover the other part with the chairlift.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

Take a break during the ascent through the forest. If you are very quiet, with a bit of luck you can watch the local wildlife.
