Bellwald
History
History
The Alemanni
Immigrant Alemanni carried out extensive land clearing activities in the Goms region and initially settled in individual farms, from which, as the clans grew, small hamlets and village settlements gradually developed.
First documented mention of Bellwald
At that time, the area broke away from feudal rule.
Bellwalderberg
The "Bellwalderberg" formed a farmers' guild with the goal of buying their way free from existing taxes and dues. From this, the municipality and the citizenry developed, which in 1555 formally recorded the citizen statutes in writing. As the actual village constitution, these statutes contained provisions and regulations regarding the recognition and acquisition of citizenship rights and governed economic life and land use.
Emigration
Agriculture, with its limited land resources, was unable to sustain the entire population, forcing part of the people to emigrate. Already in the 19th century, many emigrated as mercenaries to serve in foreign armies, and after the ban on mercenary service in 1859, as colonists to South America or as dairy workers to Prussia and California.
After the First World War, there was a migration to the municipalities of the main valley or to other cantons.
Cable Car Fürgangen-Bellwald
A cable car now connected Bellwald with the valley, and the great transformation began.
Hotel
The first hotel in Bellwald was opened.
Tourism development
The completed road to the valley accelerated the development of tourism.
